Is Beef Tallow Good For Your Skin?

Beef tallow has exploded in popularity in professional skincare circles recently.  However, you may be surprised to learn that tallow, or rendered animal fat, has been used by people in kitchens all over the world for thousands of years.  At its most basic level, tallow is a food product.  But is beef tallow good to put on your skin?

(Spoiler alert: It’s great for your skin. It moisturizes while being awesome to use on rashes, cuts, and eczema.)  Let’s dive in to see what all the fuss is about.

The Benefits of Beef Tallow

One of the reasons that beef tallow is elite at moisturizing the skin, is that it is very similar in composition to the natural oils your body already produces. Beef tallow is composed of fatty acids like stearic, oleic, and palmitic acids. When applied directly to the skin, tallow is able to lock in moisture and prevents dryness by penetrating the skin's lipid barrier. This makes tallow far superior to synthetic moisturizers because lab created products tend to sit on the surface of the skin. Tallow, on the other hand, penetrates deeply and leaves skin feeling soft without a greasy residue.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the deeper a moisturizer is rubbed into your skin, the longer lasting the hydration benefits. In addition, tallow really shines in the harsh winter months, especially for people with dry or flaky skin. On the whole, beef tallow has amazing hydrating properties. But how good is it for people with sensitive skin?

Is Beef Tallow Good for Sensitive Skin?

First, tallow is great for skin in general. It contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are naturally present in grass-fed beef fat. These fat-soluble vitamins nourish the skin, support cell regeneration, and offer antioxidant protection against pollution and the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun. But what about people with sensitive skin who struggle to find products that won’t trigger redness, itching, or inflammation. How does beef tallow do in this regard?
"The pharmaceutical industry has become a marketing machine to sell drugs of questionable benefit."

Once again, the fact that tallow mimics the natural oils your body already produces gives it an edge over commercial skincare products. It also is free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives. These commonly used irritants in mainstream products make most commercially available skin care products unusable for people with sensitive skin. Beef tallow avoids these issues.

As a bonus, beef tallow's fatty acid profile has anti-inflammatory properties, which can soothe conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Its lack of chemicals and natural origins make beef tallow an effective option for sensitive skin.

(Caveat: As always you should do patch testing whenever trying a new skin care product if you have very sensitive skin.)

Given these advantages it is easy to see why beef tallow is the first choice for many people with sensitive skin but how popular is it generally?

Are There Different Tallow Products For Your Skin?

Beef tallow can come in many different forms. The key to being able to tell them all apart is to focus on where it is sourced from and how it is processed.  Generally, most beef tallow products can be broken down as follows:

  • Grass-Fed vs. Grain-Fed: Tallow from grass-fed cows is often touted as superior due to its higher nutrient content. Grass-fed beef contains more omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, and vitamins. Grain-fed tallow, while still moisturizing, may lack the same richness in nutrients.

  • Unrefined vs. Refined: Unrefined tallow retains its natural color, scent, and nutrients but may have a slightly beefy odor that some people find off-putting. Refined tallow is processed to remove impurities and smell, This results in a neutral, white product.  The refined version of tallow is generally used when adding other ingredients for blended skin care products (see below).

  • Pure vs. Blended: Some skincare products use pure tallow, while others mix it with essential oils, beeswax, or other natural products.  This can enhance texture and add therapeutic benefits. For example, honey-infused tallow might appeal to those seeking its natural effects alongside hydration.

When shopping for tallow make sure to take all of these options into account (while noting that most people opt for high-quality, grass-fed versions). Once you make your decision on what to buy, are there any things to look out for when using tallow?

Final Thoughts: Is Beef Tallow Worth Trying?

So, is beef tallow good for skin? For most people, the answer is a resounding yes. Its hydrating properties, nutrient density, and compatibility with sensitive skin make it an elite option among skin care options. If you join the thousands of people who use beef tallow daily, start small, source wisely, and listen to your skin.
