Report From The Kitchen #12 - Mighty Mouse’s Attack On Traditional Tooth Powder

Mighty Mouse’s Attack On Traditional Tooth Powder

In 1942, Terrytoons studio created a new cartoon character for 20th Century Fox called Super Mouse.  I’m not going to say that they chose an anthropomorphized mouse because of the success of another anthropomorphized mouse but this was almost certainly the case.  After 8 films, the character's name was changed into the recognizable icon we know today as Mighty Mouse.

Mighty Mouse was kind of a big deal back in the day, appearing in 80 theatrical shorts all the way up to 1961.  The character's fame and influence resulted in advertisers using the IP to sell their products.  One such company was BIG TOOTHPASTE's original villain, Colgate.

The cartoon character first began to appear in Colgate commercials in the 1950s, battling the dastardly villain Mr. Tooth Decay.  The product that was primarily promoted was called Colgate Dental Cream with Gardol.  The ad campaign contributed to people moving away from traditional tooth powders and using what has turned into what we know today as toothpaste.

BIG TOOTHPASTE would have you believe that tooth powder is a newfangled fad.  In fact, it used to be the standard in dental care.

The Toothpaste Illusion

Modern toothpaste was originally pitched as a convenient upgrade to old-school tooth powder.  The idea was that everything would remain the same, except the new form would save you time.
The challenge is that the paste form makes it easier for BIG CORP to put in unseen additives in order to make toothpaste more appealing to your palate.  Companies don’t think twice about using foaming agents, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives in their formulas.
Tooth powder does not need any of these things as it traces its roots back centuries.  In the not-so-recent past, it was very difficult to preserve anything, so tooth powder by definition had to be shelf-stable out of the gate.  You can trace its roots back centuries where people across the world would use crushed bones, herbs, clays, and salts for dental care.  These tooth powders were simple, concentrated, and effective.
You don't need anything to dilute the active minerals in tooth powder just to make it more convenient.  Toothpaste is a solution for something that was never a problem in the first place.
At the Van Man Co. we’ve taken ancient wisdom and created our own modern blend, focusing on natural abrasives that work with your body’s natural processes.
Let’s look at a myth (or two) that BIG TOOTHPASTE tries to sell you on to abandon the tooth powder of your ancestors for their modern frankenchemical products.

Myth #1:   Tooth Powder Is Too Abrasive

It is not an uncommon question for people to to ask me “Won’t tooth powder scratch my enamel?”.  The short answer to this is “no”.  Our tooth powder uses controlled, food-grade minerals that polish rather than gouge.
Customer feedback has shown us that with proper technique (soft brush and gentle circles) our tooth powder provides a better experience than harsh toothpastes with a high RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) as measured by the FDA.
There is also the added benefit of avoiding the fillers and detergents that can disrupt your oral biome.  With tooth powder, you get a very satisfying clean mouth feel without the chemical aftertaste.  Too abrasive?  Only if you are brushing like you haven’t seen a toothbrush in a few months.

Myth #2: Tooth Powder Can’t Prevent Cavities Like Fluoride Toothpaste

“Ok, it feels great to use but does it work since there is no fluoride in it?”  Might your next question.
Conventional pastes lean heavily on the mystique of fluoride, like it is some kind of magical chemical that can do amazing things other than kill you at high doses.  While I won’t debate the effectiveness or safety of fluoride here, what I will say is that you don’t need it to have superior dental care.
Tooth powders support the remineralization of your teeth naturally.  The right formula can also aid in plaque reduction, gingivitis control, and help to resolve gum issues.  The key is to create an environment where you natural processes can maintain a healthy mouth.
Harsh chemicals and fillers are not the path to take.
Instead, consider binding toxins and heavy metals with clay while supporting a healthy mouth biome where your mouth can heal itself by using tooth powder just like your ancestors did.
