Report From The Kitchen #4 - Ancient Bison Antiquues Farm = Amazing Bison Tallow Balm

Ancient Bison Antiquues Farm = Amazing Bison Tallow Balm

Although it is true that unearned nostalgia is real, sometimes things were better actually back in the day.  Fast food places used to cook their fries in tallow, for instance.  If you want to go way back for another example you have to look no farther than the Bison Antiquus.

First of all, it weighed 3,500 lbs which is a quarter bigger than the modern American bison.  It also had longer horns, was taller and longer.  This meant that it was not something to be messed with unless you were serious.  They were hunted by native people in North Carolina, South Carolina,  Oklahoma, and Washington State.

The ancient bison Antiquus is the direct ancestor to the American Bison pictured here.

A lot of people think that the modern American Bison are extinct.  I am happy to report that they are still around.  Although there are only approximately 20,000 bison in conservation herds, there are over 420,000 bison in commercial herds.  The commercial demand for bison is one of the big reasons that the species will be saved.  Let’s look at one reason the modern bison is so valuable:  Tallow.

Why Bison Tallow Is Better Than Beef Tallow

I am a big fan of beef tallow for use in cooking and health products.  VanMan's Classic Tallow & Honey Balm is one of my flagship products.  It will always get the job done for your skincare needs.  But, if you want to spend the money and go to the next level, bison tallow is the answer.  Why?

First, it is richer in vitamins and minerals than beef tallow.  Specifically, it has more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than beef tallow.  CLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that may lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.  It also is rich in Omega-3s acids which help with skin, eye, joint, and respiratory health.  Finally, bison tallow is closer to the natural fats in human skin than beef tallow.

You may get these benefits even if you only apply bison tallow topically to your skin as a balm, given that everything that gets absorbed through your skin goes into your body.  This is one of the reasons that I have a hard time keeping VanMan’s Tallow and Honey Bison Balm in stock to keep up with demand.

Why VanMan’s Tallow And Honey Bison Balm Is The Best In The World

When I decided to make a premier bison tallow, I did not have to start from scratch.  I already had the recipe from my original beef tallow balm.  I only need to figure out how to max out something that was already a proven premier skin care option in the marketplace.

I did this by going next level with the ingredients.   We began to source the highest grade Manuka Honey and organic cold-pressed olive oil from California.  Then I add organic royal jelly into the mix.  (If you don’t know what royal jelly is check out last week's blog: The Most Amazing Bee Fact You’ve Never Heard Off (What Is Royal Jelly?))  The simple but powerful moves resulted in a bison tallow that is handmade in small batches and the best in the world.

I am always looking to the wisdom of the past to make the products of today the best they can be.  I can’t have an Antiquus Bison farm but one day I hope to add to the conservation herds of the American Bison so future generations can continue to benefit from this amazing animal.
